Honda Africa Twin was launched in the country recently at a price of Rs.12.9 lakh (Ex-showroom Delhi). We all have been hearing since sometime that this new bike is also addressed as CRF 1000L and reaches India as CKD (Completely Knocked Down) units. But now, let me enlighten the bike enthusiasts with some more details here.
These units are being assembled here and sold through the company’s Wing World outlets across 22 cities. While this adventure tourer is said to directly compete with its 1000cc rival Kawasaki Versys 1000 and Suzuki V-strom, there are few leaders in the market like the Triumph Tiger 800 who is ready to face the battle. Let us take a deep look into the three competitors and their specifications to know how intense the battle will be.
Honda Africa Twin comes with retro looks fused to contemporary styling cues that are evident in every bit of the motorcycle. The tall windscreen above the dual headlamps, the aerodynamic fairing at its front, the short fender, high ground clearance, 21 inch spoke wheels and the tall seating gives the complete look of an adventure tourer.
Kawasaki Versys 1000L possesses the attributes of a dual purpose motorcycle while maintaining the looks of an adventure tourer. Its tall riding stance, small but adjustable windscreen, long seat with flat handlebar and the 17 inch alloy wheels make it look more of an on-roader unlike the Africa twin.

Kawasaki Versys 1000 gets few striking features like an analogue style tachometer on an LCD screen with speedometer, clock, dual trip meters, odometer, current and average fuel consumption, fuel gauge, external air temperature and many more important functions. It also gets ABS that offer the rider better control over the motorcycle, hence assuring a comfortable ride, no matter whichever terrain they chose. Again the seat height at 840mm is pretty much a tough challenge for short riders here.
Triumph Tiger 800 gets an advanced instrument display that shows average speed, fuel economy and the three riding modes, but doesn’t have anything there to challenge its rivals. However, other features like ride-by-wire technology, multiple mode traction control, cruise control, dual accessory socket and a switchable ABS for better performance ensures rider satisfaction. In terms of seat height, the Tiger scores better than the others as it comes with an adjustable seat height as low as 790mm thereby ensuring convenience for all riders.
Honda Africa Twin is powered by a 999cc parallel twin engine that produces power worth 87bhp and 92Nm of peak torque. These figures make it one of the least powerful bike in the group with a lower power to weight ratio. The bike weighs 245kg.
Kawasaki Versys 1000 is powered by an 1043cc in-line four cylinder engine that produces 120bhp at 9000rpm and 102Nm of peak torque at 7500rpm. The bike weighs 250kg being the heaviest of all.
Tiger 800 is powered by an 800cc in-line triple engine that produces power worth 94bhp and a peak torque of 78Nm which is relatively lower than the other two competitors. The bike weighs 235kg.
The suspension duties on the Africa twin are carried out by 45mm Inverted Showa front forks and remote preload adjusted mono shock suspension at its rear. Braking is handled by twin 310mm floating discs at the front and single 256mm floating disc at the rear.
Kawasaki Versys 1000 gets 43mm inverted front forks and preload adjusted monoshocks at the rear. Braking duties are performed by 310mm twin disc at the front and 250mm single disc at the rear.
On the Triumph Tiger, suspension is handled by Showa 43mm upside down forks at the front while Showa monoshock with adjustable preload are provided at the rear. Braking is handled by twin 308mm floating discs at the front and single 255mm floating disc at the rear.
Mileage and Pricing
Honda Africa Twin has a fuel tank capacity of 18.8 litres and claims to get a mileage of 16kmpl. It is priced at Rs.13.6 lakh (Ex-showroom New Delhi).
Kawasaki Versys 1000 has a fuel tank capacity of 21 litres and claims a fuel efficiency of 14kmpl. It is priced at Rs.14.07 lakh (Ex-showroom New Delhi).
Triumph Tiger 800 on the other hand has a fuel tank capacity of 19 litres and claims a mileage of 27.4kmpl, being the most fuel efficient motorcycle in the group. It is competitively priced at Rs.12.29 lakh (Ex-showroom New Delhi).
