Peugeot buys Ambassador Car brand from Hindustan Motors

img

Hindustan Motors has signed an agreement with Peugeot, selling Ambassador Brand and certain related rights at a sum of Rs.80 crore. It also said that the proceeds of the sale will be used to clear all pending dues of employees and lenders.

To write about the glorious history of the Ambassador; there would not have been many people who have not travelled at least once in this legend. Well, Ambassador was definitely an icon of India. There weren’t streets in India where the Amby (as it is widely known) hadn’t reached. It was the most recognized car for many decades, being the Government vehicle carrying the Prime Minister while also being used as a taxi vehicle. The King of Indian Roads finally reached a halt in 2014 with no more production. It has to be painfully known that the iconic car that survived the different phases of life across various terrains and generations now belong to French Carmaker Peugeot.

As history reveals, Hindustan Motors owned by B.M Birla entered the Automobile industry in 1942 as they started indigenous production of cars. Years later, they hunted for new design which ended up in the production of Hindustan Landmaster based on the Morris Oxford Series-II. Then in 1957, they started production of the first Ambassador named Mark-1, drawing design from Morris Oxford Series-III. Mark-1, the first Ambassador was sold at Rs.14,000 back then. However, by the time they ended their sale in 2014, the car had gone few changes but the design remained the same. The final model that was launched was named Encore with a BS-IV compliant engine and sold at Rs.5.22 lakh. Hindustan Ambassador did lose its charm when other carmakers came in with new vehicles, but it still holds the name for having been in production line for many decades, from 1958-2014.

Apparently, Peugeot was seen advertising in 2002 using Ambassador in the main role on promotion of one of its cars, the Peugeot 206. This commercial seems to have actually passed on an indirect message of the company eyeing this legendary car brand back then. News had also spread around that Peugeot was planning its re-entry into the country shaking hands with C K Birla group. Now as it all turns out to be true finalizing the deal, Indians are hoping the ever popular Ambassador will have a brilliant come-back through its new parent and that our dear Amby will start to roll once again in the country landscape.
