Tygr, a Kolkata-based cab service planner, and provider is trying to take a new step and bring a change in the cab service sector in Mumbai city. The founder and CEO of Tygr, Mr. Aditya Poddar said they are planning to introduce the concept of two wheeler taxis in the city. If the rules of the state allow, the company plans to start the same as soon as possible. Tygr approached Mumbai city initially with 5000 new cabs on roads. The field is already under control of giants like, Ola and Uber, which made Tygr approach the city with something new.
However, the prevailing conditions have not been much supportive towards this idea. Tygr is not the very first company who introduced the idea of two wheeler taxis in Mumbai. Earlier in 2015, a startup company named “Hey Taxi” started two wheeler taxi services in the city and had stopped the same after a week. There were no provisions in the Maharashtra Motor Vehicle Rules, for two wheeler taxi operations in the city which led to the shutting down of their operations. While the situation has not changed much now, the absence of a rule which will clearly state about the fares and the safety of passengers would be yet another drawback. However, the company has plans to give it a try in the Bollywood Metro city as they have been already providing the same service in some other cities successfully.UberMOTO tried this in Bangalore and found to be unsuccessful. Albeit, Tygr and K bike taxi are running this service in Kolkata now, there are reasons for companies to alsotake back steps from this idea. The growing level of congestion and traffic may make the state authorities to revise the rules and think about a service like this in future.
This concept is very popular in China considering it as a quicker and cheaper cab transportation service compared to all other services. If introduced in India, it may turn out to be very helpful to travel through the congested roads in the country.
Mr. Poddar said they are aware that there will not be a huge demand for the two-wheeler cabs as people tend to look for comfort while traveling. Monsoon season could also be another time which will bring down their demand for two-wheeler taxis. However, Tygr has plans to use these vehicles at free hours to deliver goods in the city considering it to be financially viable.
Tygr is planning to compile cabs, three wheelers, delivery vehicles and ambulance services in a single app too. Car owners will be able to subscribe the same at a cost of Rs.500. Customers do not need to pay anything extra to Tygr. The company will also be offering 30% cheaper fares to passengers. Considering the many advantages of two wheeler cabs as well as the growing population and traffic in the city, it would not be surprising if the Maharashtra Government gave it a second thought.
