Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari warned the automobile industry to come up with advanced technology to develop vehicles using alternative fuels instead of petrol and diesel. He also pointed out that he wanted the pollution and import bill to be reduced in the country. At the 57th annual event organized by SIAM to discuss on various programmes for the Automobile Industry, the Transport Minister clearly warned the auto makers that without choice, they will have to move to production of vehicles that run on electricity, bio-diesel, ethanol and compressed natural gas; else he will bulldoze the existing fuel setup completely that is polluting the country. He also added that the government has a crystal clear policy to reduce the import bills of crude oil and arrest pollution to a great extent.
NitinGadkari urged the automakers to shift to public transport and find solutions for their existing problem through diversification. As part of the initiative to go all-electric by 2030, the union transport minister also stated that they the government has decided to introduce 15 industries for second generation ethanol that can be produced from eco-friendly raw materials like agro-based cotton straw, wheat straw, rice straw, bagass and bamboo which is import substitute and cost effective too. Automakers were quite disappointed that the policy changes were too quick and difficult for them to keep up with the pace. Gadkari on the other hand strongly stated that whoever was against the government’s plans would not receive any support from the government. He went on to suggest a solution that the battery for electric cars should be made in India to make it economically viable as the costs of manufacturing for the same has come down from what it used to be initially.
