is one of the most popular and best-selling vehicles from Mahindra
. The new second-generation version of this model has been spotted testing again on roads. Even though it was wrapped in camouflage, it gave a somewhat vague idea of how the next gen Thar would look like.
As seen on the images it comes in the same CJ5 inspired design. Muscular wheel arches and 17-inch wheels, front grille, tailgate mounted spare wheels and the side facing rear seats continue to remain the same. The rear width has been slightly increased. We can expect new headlamps and tail lights which is not clear from the image. Changes in the engine too are expected in this revision.
The outgoing version of Thar gets a BS-IV 2.5 L CRDe engine which produces 106Ps of power and 247Nm of torque and a 2.6 L DI engine which produces 64Ps of power and 195Nm of torque. The diesel engine will be replaced by an all-new 2.0 L BSVI complaint diesel engine this time which produces 142Ps of power and 300Nm of torque. We can also expect a four-wheel drive layout with a low range gearbox. Mahindra reportedly will update the new Thar with mechanical locking rear differential that can help the SUV to pull itself during risky drives in rough terrains.
As of BS-IV norms, the Next generation Thar will have to pass the new safety norms as well. To overcome this, Mahindra will have to stiffen the ladder frame chassis and install with dual airbags, ABS, reverse parking sensors, seat belt reminder and speed alert system as standard features. We can expect the new Thar on 2020 Auto Expo and the price may be hiked due to the revisions on it. Force Ghurkha is the competitor in this segment for Mahindra Thar.
