BMW India President, Frank Schloeder had announced that the company will soon feature petrol engines on all their existing models and the process seems to have begun. BMW has kept their word by launching the petrol variants of the popular SUVs; X3 xDrive28i and X5 xDrive35i in Indiaon December 7th. Both the models are being locally manufactured in their Chennai plant and are available showrooms across the country.
The X3 xDrive28i is equipped with the same engine in the 3 series – 2L 4-cylinder turbo petrol engine paired with 8-speed automatic transmission and produces 245hp and a maximum torque of 350Nm. This SUV is capable of touching 0 to 100kmph speed in approximately 6.5 seconds.
The X5 xDrive35i on the other hand is equipped with a 3L inline 6-cylinder petrol engine coupled to 8-speed Sport Steptronic automatic transmission and produces 306hp and a maximum torque of 400Nm. This SUV too claims to touch 0 to 100kmph in approximately 6.5 seconds while the Steptronic automatic gearbox helps in smooth shifting of gears.
Unlike the diesel trims, the petrol variants are available in five seater option. Most of the features on the new petrol trims are similar to the X3 and X5 diesel variants like the iDrive infotainment system, 600W audio system, panoramic sunroof and special safety features which the BMW never compromised upon.
X3 competes against the likes of Audi Q5, Mercedec GLC and Land Rover Range Rover Evoque while the X5 competes with Mercedec GLE and the Volvo XC 90.
X3 x Drive 28i is priced at Rs.54.90 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi) X5 x Drive 35iis priced at Rs.73.50 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi) This petrol variant launch very well indicates an initiative taken by the company following the Diesel ban by the National Green Tribunal. BMW has also plans to refine their entire lineup of diesel vehicles and make them ready to comply with the Euro VI norms by next year.
