To mark the 70th anniversary of their popular model, Mahindra and Mahindra Limited launched a limited special edition, Thar 700 at a price of Rs.9.99 lakh in India (Ex-showroom, Delhi). As the name suggests, this limited edition model will have only 700 units on sale. This edition will also mark the end of an era with the first generation Thar saying goodbye. The next-gen model is expected to be launched in 2020 in an all-new avatar.
The model comes with unique features like all limited editions. One of the main highlights on the new Mahindra Thar 700 is that it is available only in two colour schemes, Napoli black and Aqua Marine. The car gets five-spoke, 15-inch alloy wheels as seen on old Scorpio. In the special package, the Thar's signature edition gets black sporty decals on its bonnet lid while a silver finish enhances the front bumper. A special signature edition badge on the Thar 700's right fender holds the signature of Anand Mahindra, Chairman, Mahindra Group and this reveals how special this edition is to Mahindra.
Inside the cabin, the new model gets leatherette covers with special edition badge for the seats. Mahindra Thar 700 is powered by the same 2.5-litre CRDe engine that produces 105 bhp and 247 Nm of torque. This engine is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. Thar 700 costs Rs.50,000 more than the outgoing Thar CRDe that is priced at Rs.9.49 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).
The new Thar 700 will not come with a driver airbag, a passenger seat-belt reminder or rear parking sensors; however, will feature the mandatory safety feature ABS. The missing features indicate that Mahindra has clear plans to finish off all Thar 700 units prior to the July 1, 2019 deadline, after which the safety features will turn mandatory in India. The second generation Thar is expected to make its debut at the Auto Expo 2020. Next Gen Scorpio too is expected to be unveiled next year.
Bookings for the 4X4 off-roader Thar 700 can be made at any authorized dealerships across India or online at www.mahindrasyouv.com.
