Since its debut at the Auto Expo 2016, Jeep India has been planning the launch of its SUVs in the country which kept getting delayed due to many reasons. Jeep, the legendary American utility vehicle brand owned by Fiat-Chrysler started its Indian operations with the launch of its two vehicles - Grand Cherokee and Wrangler.
The company will begin operations initially with two dealers ; one each in Delhi and Ahmedabad. Concept motors , one of the Hyundai dealers in Ahmedabad has taken up the Jeep dealership there in the city. Next in line is Kochi where Pinnacle motors, one of the Fiat dealers will run the Kochi dealership followed by Mumbai where the company plans to have its base by next year.
Grand Cherokee SRT is the only model launched in Delhi due to the diesel ban on vehicles with more than 2000cc engine. Grand Cherokee came in two variants , Limited and Summit which are equipped with 3L CRD Turbo V6 Diesel engine.
Wrangler Unlimited comes charged with a 2.8L CRD Turbo Diesel engine mated to a 5 speed automatic transmission. Pricing starts from 90 lakhs for Cherokke and 71 lakhs for wrangler. All three models reached India as completely built units. By the next year, it has been expected that the company will start locally assembling its products at a facilty in the country.
Anyhow, the good news after the long wait is that Jeep India is planning to open around 10 outlets by the end of this year.
