It is quite exhilarating given while writing a comparison review about KTM DUKE 200 and Bajaj Pulsar 200 NS. KTM was the brand that entered into the Indian automobile market shaking hands with Bajaj Auto who now has close to 48% of stake in KTM.Duke 200 manufactured by Bajaj Auto for KTM in India holds close resemblance to Bajaj Pulsar 200 NS that comes from the same family. However, when it comes to performance, these two beasts are purely one to one competitors. What keeps the enthusiasts wondering is the price difference of 30-35% between these models, even though either model does not show any superiority in terms of engine displacement, power and torque.
Bajaj Pulsar 200 NS was launched in a new avatar, quite different from the previous Pulsar series of bikes that hadn’t included naked bikes till then. Pulsar 200 NS designed as a naked and carries the looks of a street fighter model appears to be a tough competition for Duke 200. This naked sports bike is muscular and bulky in style and is available in a range of colours.
KTM Duke 200 is designed with light weight material and the whole bike was built in a design by giving mass at the centre of the bike. In short, this is the first bike in India with a trellis frame design. This design provides light weight to the vehicle and increases its rigidity. DUKE possesses a solid styled body and appears to be a compact fit model. The exhaust is fitted underneath the bike for comfortable cornering.
Bajaj Pulsar 200 NS, a model that is modified from the previous NS series comes with a secondary air induction pipe for engine cooling. The refinement of the design and performance has been upgraded to its next level. The belly enhances the sporty look of this motorcycle. 200 NS is carburetted and has three spark plugs for efficient combustion.
280 mm front disc brake renders good braking level at any speed. Upright handle bar gives more ease to handle the bike in corners. Pulsar 200 NS comes with telescopic fork upfront and adjustable mono shock at rear. The rear suspension is air charged which provides good cushion than the hydraulic one. Instrument console on this motorcycle consists of digital and analog tachometer. These minor changes on the upgraded version of 200 NS have moved the weight to 152kgson the bike.
KTM Duke 200 has an upright handlebar similar to the Pulsar 200 NS providing the rider with a comfortable ride in the city without any strain. Inverted telescopic front fork and 10 step adjustable mono shock at the rear offers smoother and sturdy suspension. KTM has equipped this motorcycle with 280 mm disc brake at the front and 230 mm disc brake in its rear;this combination is excellent to control the bike while braking at any speed. Duke 200 has fully multi functional digital display on the instrument console with speedometer and tachometer. This bike feels really good to flick around in city traffic and also has good acceleration.200 DUKE at 148kgs, weigh slightly lesser than the Pulsar 200 NS giving this motorcycle much sleeker looks compared to its rival partner.
Apparently, the engine on Pulsar 200 NS is based on DUKE 200 with matching bore and stroke dimensions. This bike is fitted with a 199.5 cc liquid cooled engine that delivers 23.5PS at 9500rpm. The engine is paired to a 6 speed gear box. Bajaj Auto has provided triple spark technology to the engine for more efficient combustion to get higher mileage. In the entire Pulsar series, this model has liquid cooled engine system and secondary air cooling that allows the bike to run longer without getting overheated.
Duke 200gets its power from a 199.5cc liquid cooled engine too, but produces a more healthy power of 25PS at 10000rpm with 6 speed gear box as well. KTM offers 35kmpl in city traffic and carries an engine that has fuel injection for better power delivery.
If you are a rider who is looking for a highly responsive bike, you can go for Duke 200. Minor limitation in Duke 200 was the harder suspension which is good only for the flat surface roads and it doesn’t suits for the long stretch rides. Commercially, the price is much higher than Pulsar NS 200, but it can be justified by the quality of components used and micro level detailingdone on the design especially with the fact that it has an Austrian brand name tag.
On the other hand, if you would like to choose a bike for relaxed ride that doesn’t lack on performance, then your choice can be 200 NS. A minor drawback onthis Pulsarmodel is its hard seat cushion, even though the pillion seat is comfortably wider than the DUKE 200. The compact design allows the bike to move faster through the urban traffic. It is also an excellent choice for long distance rides. In terms of price, 200 NS is worth the money spent and gives a superior motorcycling experience.
