Most awaited bike of 2018…….Yes, the JAWA was launched after a long gap in India once again. Jawa, Royal Enfield, Yezdi and Rajdoot were quite popular names in the country during the 80s period. However, when globalization hit the country, more and more two-wheeler companies from Japan started looking upon India as a potential market. As a result, most of our iconic models were replaced by easy to use commuters and flashy looking sports bikes.
Royal Enfield was the lone survivor who managed to continue in the market in all the adverse situations. Yezdi was replaced by Jawa in 1973 when the owners of the iconic Jawa loved the models. Between 1961 & 1971 Jawa manufactured the 250 type 353/04 having gained the license for the same. Thus Jawa motorcycles earned a reputation for being rugged, simple and unbreakable.
In 2016 Indian brand Mahindra &Mahindra acquired the British Motorcycle Brand “BSA” but they also entered part ownership to produce and sell Jawa motorcycles in India. And in the same year Anand Mahindra, Executive and Chairman of Mahindra Group tweeted about the come-back of the legendary motorcycle Jawa to the Indian soil.
And yes, Jawa is finally back in India!
New Jawa comes with a 293cc engine with a classic retro-styled body in the chrome finish as in the yesteryear models of this brand. Launched in two models, Jawa Standard and Jawa Forty Two, these siblings share the same heart.
I will tell you what I felt when I rode on these two classic motorcycles. Are they old wine in new bottle?
Mahindra & Mahindra tried their best in Jawa to keep up its retro classic design on the new Jawa too. It gets an elegant design while comparing to its competitors. The headlight comes in a circular design as seen on the old guy. There is a halogen bulb for clearer views on the road. This model appears to be capture hearts of younger generation. The bar handles, broader seats and the classic tank gives the rider more comfort.
Chrome finished tank gets a Jawa logo on it to show off the brand name. The fuel tank also provides good thigh support. This motorcycle features a dual exhaust unit reminding of the old Jawa design. Exhaust note is pretty good and can be adjusted in different ways to suit the rider.
Jawa standard is available in three colours- Grey, Maroon & Black. A single meter console consisting of odometer, fuel gauge and trip meter gives good visibility in a digital analogue display. The position of the ignition slot is another notable feature of Jawa. While coming to the rear view, the LED tail lamp gives a sparkling clear view of vehicles behind.
The heart of Jawa is a BS-IV single cylinder, liquid cooled, FI DOHC 4 valve, 293cc engine (on both models) which produces a power of 27bhp in 28Nm torque coupled to a 6 speed transmission box. Conventional telescopic front forks and Gas Canister- Twin Hydraulic Shock Absorber with 5-step adjustability produces better suspension, stability and good riding comfort.
Jawa needs just 4 seconds to attain a speed of 60kmph and 12 seconds to reach a speed limit of 100kmph.130kmph is the topspeed reported on these newcomers. The kerb weight of Jawa is 170kgs. On highways, the mileage of these motorcycles is expected to go up to 30-32 kmpl.
280mm disc brakes with a single channel ABS at the front and 150mm drum brakes at the rear provides excellent braking power for these oldies. Single channel ABS is provided as standard across both models. 90/90-18 tyre in the front and 120/80-17 tyre in the rear gives the rider better riding power and control on highways and while turning around corners.
Jawa gets an A grade in Overall Unique Design as well as build quality. More power, better torque, less weight, more gears, and most importantly the classic retro look are features that skyrocket the bookings of Jawa since its launch. If you are looking for an entirely different experience instead of just another motorcycle, then JAWA is your best bet.
