Yamaha launched the international naked model of the R15 recently which is already a popular model in countries like Thailand, Vietnam, and Indonesia. Let’s take a deep look into the MT15 and see what keeps this motorcycle distinct from the other models.
Yamaha MT15 carries the same engine as of the new R15v3. but gets few changes on the profile as the MT15 is a naked version. Yamaha has gone in depth to study the Indian market and that explains the launch of this new model in the country.
The headlamp is one of the most impressive elements on the MT15. The new bug eyed headlamp consists of dual LED parks and LED projector headlamps. Muscular fuel tank and a wide handle bar gives the rider more comfort while riding. A muscular front cowl has been given to increase its killer looks. MT15 borrows the same alloys of the R15v3. The seating position renders more confidence to the rider around the corners. Ultra short wheel base and short steering angle are other notable features on this new naked motorcycle. Its aerodynamic design also receives huge applause.
MT15 is a longer bike at 2020mm and wider at 800mm. The wheel base of MT15 is 1335mm but shorter than the R15v3 in 1070mm. Swing arm too looks different while comparing it to R15. Box section swing arms are used in the MT15 while on R15 they are cast aluminium. The tail lamp too features LEDs and appears quite sporty.
In this segment the overall score is good for MT15, especially while considering its build quality and its impressive looks. The seats are comfortable for a single rider while the pillion rider may find it a little difficult to sit, due to its less width design towards the rear.
As said the MT15 shares the same heart of the R15v3. This new motorcycle too gets 155cc liquid cooled FI SOHC 4 valve engine which produces a power of 19.3bhp at 10,000rpm and a peak torque of 14.7Nm at 8500 RPM. The engine is mated to a 6 speed gear box which responds pretty fast. Variable Valve Actuation (VVA) technology has been used to get a low end performance. Slipper clutch is another attraction and it gives more stability around the corners. Yamaha has done a rework on the R15’s ECU to give this motorcycle better low torque and mid range punch.
The front tires are installed with MRF Zapper tires for better performance- 100/80/17 at the front and 140/70/17 at the rear. 282mm disc with a single channel ABS in the front and 220mm disc in the rear for braking, follows the same set up of R15 and its more than enough to pull down the power swiftly.
As expected, Yamaha hasn’t provided MT15 with a USD fork in the front, instead it comes with 41mm telescopic suspension in the front and monoshock in the rear. The fuel tank capacity of new Yamaha MT15 is 10L.
Rs.1.36 lakh is the on-road price in Delhi for the MT15. If you would like to know more about this vehicle or read the features and specs in detail, visit
