“BAAZ” was the nick name suggested by a Twitter user when Anand Mahindra had asked for a name suggestion before launching their much anticipated SUV Alturas G4. When Tata bought the luxury brand Jaguar Land Rover, Mahindra bought the Korean brand Ssangyong and brought them to our country revamped to suit the needs of Indians. Apparently in years that followed, they launched SUV Rexton but sadly could not make an impact on the segment. Mahindra however did not give up and revamped Ssangyong Rexton only to be launched as Alturas G4 to retail in the market here. Yester year Rexton borrowed engine and platform from Mercedes M Class while New Alturas G4 is built on an entirely new platform and does not carry any features from the past generation model.
The main attraction of Alturas G4 is its huge muscle that grabs the attention of its onlookers. The double barreled HID headlamps with DRLs and a signature grille give it an altogether new appearance. The front design reminds of the English alphabet ‘X’. Infact, we can even read out the letter from the lines on the front bumper. The front profile featuring new slim LED fog lamp with mesh housings, black cladding in the front bumper and scuff plates give an elegant view from the front side.
On the sides, the 18 inch alloys add to the muscle of this vehicle. At the same time, Indians would have been happier to receive the international spec model that gets 20 inch ones. We can see a black cladding on top of the wheel arch and the running board. Wider doors and side glass area enhances the side profile. The corner glass in the ‘C’ pillar is notably small.
While some find it not too great, some feel that the most impressive part of Alturas G4 is its rear portion. The rear design seems to be entirely new while comparing with other SUVs. Cute LED tail lamps and small bumper with scuff plates render extra ordinary looks. Small integrated spoiler and windshields gives a sporty look from the rear portion. In fact, if we need to know the width of this new SUV, the best view is from the rear profile.
Alturas G4 gets all the features expected of a premium SUV. A commanding high seating position is one of the first best things you spot as you enter the cabin. High positioned dashboard accentuates the feel of a complete off-roader.
At the same time, elegant interiors with black, wood and leather finish provides premium looks. We can expect to see such beautifully designed interiors only in premium SUVs like Porsche Cayenne and Grand Cherokee and it needs to be specially mentioned that Mahindra has succeeded in developing a vehicle with ultra-premium looks fused to get the feel of an off-roader SUV too.
The 8 inch touch screen infotainment system is huge enough to not be missed as we enter the Alturas G4. Vehicle information, reverse camera etc. can be operated on this unit while the 7 inch TFT unit displays fuel indicator, real time tyre pressure and other meters. Both these screens supply with necessary information for the driver.
Driver seat can be electrically adjusted in eight ways. Mahindra has added more storage space to Alturas, thanks to the spacious cabin. Alturas is a 7 seater SUV, a complete family vehicle that provides all the features for comfort including exceptionally good thigh support and seat height. Alturas has a better feature list compared to its competitors in the segment. There is an electric sunroof for that special evening drives. Over all, Alturas sports a premium touch throughout the cabin and evidently Mahindra has tried their best this time.
Brushed aluminium finish and leather finish with an ultra-luxurious dashboard design that features soft touch plastics are all elements worth bragging. Ventilated front seats add to the premium aura of comfort.
Deep door pads provide more storage space for keeping mobiles and water bottles. Second row seats give good thigh support for long journey and arm rest is provided in the second-row seats. These can be folded to accommodate three persons in a row. However, third row seats do not appear comfortable enough, especially for adults during long journeys. Apparently, most of the SUVs in the Indian market do not provide luxurious seating comfort in the third-row seat because of the higher position of the platform. Mobile holders and AC vents have been provided in the last row seats too adding to the convenience
Alturas G4 features a good responsive engine, a 2.2L diesel engine which makes 178bhp at 4000rpm and 420Nm torque between 1600-2600Rpm. The engine is well refined and an easy handling one while compared to old SUVs of Mahindra. New Alturas is being offered in 2 variants- a 2 wheel drive and a 4 wheel drive. Both variants share a 7 speed automatic torque convertible type gearbox made by Mercedes Benz. In short, no turbo lags felt during drives. A well-tuned engine with a short gear ratio is yet another attractive feature on Alturas. Needless to say, the acceleration output is mind blowing.
New Alturas promises more stability at high speeds. Midrange torque is best in class and feels quite easy to handle on both city and highway drives. Even though the Alturas has body on frame design, the body roll on this SUV is negligibly felt, thanks to Mahindra’s new technological updates. ABS with EBD, 9 Airbags, Hill descent assist, Hill ascent assist, Roll over mitigation, Hydraulic brake assist, emergency stop warning and many more safety features are available on Alturas G4.
It is quite clear that the segment’s competitors including Isuzu MuX, Ford Endeavour and Toyota Fortuner will have a tough time ahead.
