When we think of hybrid cars, the first name that comes to our mind is Toyota. Since 2002, Toyota Camry has been in India, quite popular as an executive sedan. However in 2013, this model was given a facelift only to be re-launched with a hybrid system. After a couple of years, Toyota once again brings Camry, this time in its 8th generation equipped with Toyota’s New Global Platform and 4th gen Hybrid Electric system. This makes the new Camry more driver oriented, safer to travel and a value for money model.
As mentioned earlier, the new Camry gets an all-new platform based on Toyota’s New Global Architecture (TNGA). The design itself has undergone massive change, which is quite visible at the very first look. With sleeker design that sports lower height, increased length and width, the personality of this executive sedan has multiplied manifold. Prominent bonnet with character lines and a big grille which reminds us of the Lexus models render eye-catching looks. Sleek projector LED headlamps and LED DRLs enhance the charisma. Brushed aluminium grille extends to both ends as the continuation of big air dams towards LED fog lamps. A small strip at the center of the grille with the prestigious Toyota logo looks dashing. This logo gets a chrome finish in blue color insert to represent the Hybrid model.
The side profile is attractive too with 18 inch tyres, hybrid badging and chrome enhancements on door and door handles. Position of the side mirrors has been revised to avoid blind spots. Sleek LED tail lamps and a Camry badge on the boot lid enhances the grandeur of rear profile. Rear bumpers are muscular compared to the yester year model.
New Toyota Camry brags of one of the most luxurious cabin in this price segment. This model has always been known for super comfortable seats, especially at the rear. No wonder, it is also known as the Chauffeur driven car.
The rear portion of the cabin lets you relax in the lap of luxury. There is a touch screen control pad in the rear arm rest that allows complete control over all the features of new Camry. Listen to your favorite music, recline in the rear seats, control the rear sunshade, adjust the climate control buttons all with the help of this touch screen control pad. Front passenger seats have power buttons on the right side to adjust for comfortable seating. This can be adjusted even from the rear seats.
NVH (Noise, Vibration and Harshness) levels are close to minimum on the New Camry that further ensures superior comfort during journeys. Leg room and head room appears impressive making the car feel more spacious and is yet another boon in long drives.
The ventilated front seats are one of the best in the feature list. The dashboard of the 8th gen Camry gets a completely new design. Toyota calls it the ‘Y dashboard’, a name earned by the shape of it that also looks pretty cool and futuristic. Toyota has given the dash Onyx finish with brushed aluminium texture to accentuate the premium feel inside the cabin. There are few piano black elements as well seen throughout the cabin. The upholstery gets a beige leather combination.
The Camry provides all the features of a luxury sedan. There is a tilt and slide electric sunroof (which Toyota prefers to call a moon roof), 3 zone climate control, 8” touch screen infotainment system with 9 speaker JBL music system, 10 inch heads-up display unit, interior illumination package, tyre pressure monitoring system, wireless smartphone charger and an endless list of features that leave you contented throughout the journey. There is a digital-analog meter and the TFT screen that supply with necessary vehicle information for the driver. Enough bottle holders along the door pads are there but at some cases we feel small inconvenience due to the small size that does not allow big bottles to fit in. The boot space is another feature to be noticed. It has a large capacity of boot space and the spare wheel is an alloy wheel.
New Camry gets a 2.5L petrol engine with the 4th gen Hybrid system. Toyota claims a mileage of 23.27kmpl on this sedan. While comparing to its predecessor, mileage has gone up by 20% as against 19kmpl which is an impressive figure. The brand has done a great deal of work and that’s quite evident from the driving dynamics too on this aggressive car, thanks to Toyota’s New Global Architecture.
The engine gets a combined output of 218PS powered with an additional Nickel metal hydride battery. The driver can opt to use EV mode for a complete electric drive until a certain speed. At the same time, it is also possible to switch between driving modes, for which there are 3 additional modes to choose from. There is a small noise while punching the car in initial acceleration but that is definitely not a negative remark on New Camry. The steering wheel is comfortable to maneuver throughout the journey. Suspension has been returned for more comfort.
While coming to safety, it is well know that this brand does not compromise at all. New Camry is installed with highest level of safety features that include 9 SRS airbags, vehicle stability control, tyre pressure monitoring, brake hold function and ABS with EBD to name a few. It needs to be specially mentioned that New Camry was also awarded a full 5-star crash test safety rating by ASEAN NCAP.
